In order to provide the university community with easy access to the bibliographical resources, the majority of the libraries offer users open and unlimited access to the publications. As long as the security system barriers aren't exceeded, users may freely circulate with the publications within the limits of the library.
The general collection is organized by subject matter, according to the Universal Decimal Classification system (UDC in English / CDU in Portuguese), a well known classification scheme that organizes knowledge into logical categories.
Publications identified by the initials BRE and BREG, due to their nature (Special Collections), are kept in closed access storage and have to be to be requested by users at the nearest attendance desk. Users interested in consulting the publications above must retrieve the serial and call number of the publication from the library catalogue and request it at the nearest attendance desk.

Through the virtual tour users may see how the General library collection is distributed among the tree floors (BGUM 1, BGUM 3 and BGUM 4) as well in the Library of Guimarães (BPG). |
There is a large collection of open access periodicals (journals, magazines, bulletins, etc.) shelved alphabetically by title.

Users interested in consulting publications such CDs or videos must pick up the cover of the CD or video and hand it to the nearest attendance desk. The user will then be supplied with a set of headphones, upon which he may enter one of the audiovisual centres.
The library also offers users a self-service photocopying. In order to use this service, users must obtain a magnetic card from the automatic vending machine, located near the reception desk.
The USDB Regulation clearly defines the terms of usage of the University of Minho libraries. Since the USDB Regulation is not translated into the English version it is important to remember that library users should respect and make good use of the installations, equipments and the bibliographical resources available, so please do not smoke, eat or cause any sort of disruptions within the library complex, do not circulate with wet objects, turn off the mobile phone upon entering the library and understand that silence must be kept in order to guarantee a place for quiet study and to avoid disturbing others.
