3D Printing

The Documentation Services offer a 3D printing service, which is located in the University of Minho Library on the Azurém Campus (BPG) and in the General Library on the Gualtar Campus (BGUM).

Equipment and consumables

  • BQ Witbox 2 (temporarily unavailable) - equipped with one single extruder, offers a print volume of 295x208x200 mm (x, y, z).
  • Flashforge Creator Pro (2016) - equipped with two extruders. It has  printing volume of 227x148x150 mm (x, y, z).
  • PLA filaments (density - 1.24g / cm3) - colors usually available (unless out of stock): translucent white, white, gray, black, green, blue, orange and red. At the UMinho libraries we only use PLA. The use of filaments not supplied by USDB is not allowed.

Service operation

  • This service is exclusively for users of the University of Minho's libraries and is intended for academic or research purposes.
  • The service is subject to prior appointment. The file (s) with the object (s) to print should be sent to the address multimedia@sdum.uminho.pt for analysis and submission of the price and the expected delivery date.
  • In the request, the user must indicate his name and number and the intended color(s).
  • After confirmation, the user may collect the piece(s) at the servisse desk of the UMinho Library on the Azurém campus, or, by explicit request, at the UMinho General Library at the Gualtar campus (subject to confirmation, considering the dimensions and/or fragility of the piece).

Price and printing time

  • The cost of printing is € 0,50 per 10 grams of PLA filament. The total cost is calculated in multiples of 10 grams, which may be increased by a service charge (calculated based on the printing time and the level of object complexity).
  • Print time can vary from a few minutes to several hours, depending on the size and complexity of the object being printed.

Printing objects
Objects to be printed can be created in complete 3D modeling applications such as:

  • Autodesk 3DS Max
  • Autodesk AutoCAD
  • Blender
  • Rhino 3D
  • SolidWorks
  • Sketch Up Pro

Or using free basic 3D modeling applications such as:

There are also several files available on the internet that can be downloaded for 3D printing. We recommend the following sources:

Important notes

  • Only files in .stl format are accepted.
  • Prints will be made in PLA filaments in one single color.
  • The objects to be printed will be analyzed to try to detect any problems that might prevent their correct printing. However, there may be defects or misprints on which the SDUM declines any responsibility.
  • The object to be printed should have a volume of less than 297x210x200 mm (x, y, z). Objects of higher dimensions will be resized.
  • Upon authorization of the author, the library can disseminate multimedia works as examples of use of the servisse.
